Animal Sort having lots of pics of animals there are so many ways that you can sort them: number of legs, classification (mammal, bird, etc), color, do they have tails, how they get around (walk, hop, fly, swim, squirm, etc), skin covering (fur, scales, feathers), habitat (desert, rain forest, farm, etc) This type of game helps them to realize there are MANY different ways to look at how things are the same or different. Is it Alive? after talking about what it means to be alive (breathing, moving, eating, growing) then sort pictures: living things and non-living things Attributes we have all kinds of pictures that we use for this. We put out a few pictures (number depends on age/ability). We look at the 5 pictures and find two that are alike in some way (col! or, animals, shape, have wheels, are sweet, etc...any comparison is good). Then before we collect these cards, we look at the rest of the face up cards and see if any others would fit with these and the attribute named. If the child is having troubles I will state an attribute and let them find the cards that fit. Possibles include: I see two things that have stripes. I see 2 things that breath and are alive. I see 3 things that you would find in the kitchen. When cards have been removed put more face up cards in play from the deck.

http://www.senteacher.org/wk/letterfans.php Letter Fans these are fun to make sound out words.

  • I made rolling the ball into a fun game of reciting the alphabet or numbers. I will sit on the floor with my son and we roll the ball back and forth. Who ever rolls first calls out A and when it is caught and started to be rolled back that person calls out B and so on. We also do this with numbers.
  • picnic game. We start with a and say I am going on a picnic I am bringing and Apple then she would say B I am bringing a ball. Some of the things we bring are really funny. We also turn it into other things like I am going to the zoo and I will bring.
  • Fishing game is fun for reading. Write one word on each fish shaped card. Cover with clear Contact paper to make more durable. Add a paper clip where the mouth of the fish would be. Use a dowel, stick or pencil for a fishing pole. Add a string and a magnet for a hook. Put all the fish cards in a pile on the floor. The child "catches" a fish and may only keep it if they can read the word (or do the math fact, or answer the question...or ...or...any of the many skills...) This is one the little ones love,...and the older ones will pick up and play even though the skill is much below them...so they will want cards to play with too. The Oakes Family Played this with All Skills on this Grade level and Lower.
  • You can also take a beach ball and write letters all around it. Then toss it from kid to kid and whatever letter he/she has her/his fingers on when he/she catches it, they have to say or come up with a word that starts with it. You can also change it so they have to say the letter before it or after it to reinforce the order.
